This time, he&#8217;s joined by Florian Sempey in the title role, Diana Damrau as Oph\u00e9lie and \u00c8ve-Maud Hubeaux as Gertrude, with conductor Yves Abel on the podium.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>Hamlet<\/em>\u00a0is not just William Shakespeare\u2019s arguably most layered and philosophical tragedy but also known as a play in which all the protagonists end up dead onstage. That\u00a0<em>Hamlet<\/em>\u00a0can also be adapted successfully as an opera with a happy ending and without the great \u201cTo be or not to be\u201d soliloquy was demonstrated by Ambroise Thomas and his two librettists, Michel Carr\u00e9 and Jules Barbier. Their\u00a0<em>Hamlet<\/em>\u00a0is the most successful adaptation of the material to date as well as being one of the most significant French operas of the 1860s. Like the masterpieces turned out by Charles Gounod, it was written in a period of operatic upheaval when a new genre, the \u201cdrame lyrique\u201d, was being distilled from elements of the establishmentarian grand op\u00e9ra and the lighter op\u00e9ra comique. The new form was through-composed and complex in its musical language but more intimate and lyrical in tone and more strongly focused on the fates of its individual characters.
