Villain and heroine: The real-life husband and wife onstage in ‘Tales of Hoffmann’

The acclaimed German soprano Diana Damrau met her future husband, French bass-baritone Nicolas Testé, in a Munich church 13 years ago while performing Jean Francaix’s oratorio, “L’Apocalypse Selon.”

“It was a heaven-and-hell orchestra, a heaven-and-hell chorus, and Nicolas sang Christ,” Damrau said, adding “my redeemer” with a laugh.

Nicolas Testé is featured in the role of Nourabad on a new Metropolitan Opera / Erato Blu-ray & DVD release of Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de perles. The release is currently available for pre-order, and will be sold worldwide on February 24  via Amazon.com. The starry cast includes Diana Damrau as Leïla, Matthew Polenzani is Nadir, and Mariusz Kwiecień is Zurga, with Gianandrea Noseda and the Met Opera Orchestra. Penny Woolcock directs the new staging, which debuted at the Met on New Year’s Eve (2015).

Concert tour through South America

Nicolas Testé and soprano Diana Damrau embark on a concert tour throughout South America this season, beginning at the Teatro del Lago in Fruitillar on April 22, in concert accompanied by pianist Maciej Pikulski. They also perform at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires and Maestro Mario Perusso on April 27 and in São Paulo with the Orquestra Acadêmica Mozarteum Brasileiro on May 1 & 2. They will perform a varied programme, highlighting selections by Verdi, Gershwin, and more.
