For four performances on July 4, 7, 10 and 12, Nicolas Testé will sing the role of the Old Hebrew in Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila at the Staatsoper Berlin.
The literary source for Ferdinand Lemaire’s libretto was the Old Testament’s Book of Judges, which tells of the Israelite’s oppression in Palestinian Gaza. One of the most popular Romantic French-language operas, with its lyrical descriptions and great choral tableaux, it is now restaged by the Argentine film director and screenwriter Damián Szifron. Alexander Soddy will conduct the performances and the cast will feature Roberto Alagna and Aigul Akhmetshina in the title roles.
